Color me Pretty, Using Gels to Elevate your Senior Portrait Game

Speaker: Dan Dalstra (Website) (Social Media)

Live Demonstration

Intermediate

Grab those gels and let’s get our color on! Using gels and colors is a great way to not only separate you from the rest of the photographers in your area, but you’ll also use them to enhance the senior experience and give those seniors (and their parents) photos with that WOW factor that will get those kids super hyped and increase your sales as well. We’ll discus color theory and which colors complement each other as well as the environment. I’ll show you how to use multiple gels to showcase your client’s high school colors. You’ll learn how to quickly change colors for a smooth transition into different set ups. You’ll also learn how to use multiple gels and lights to create cool prism effects and super saturated looks as well as cool backlighting and silhouettes. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll see how easy it is to work color into all different aspects of your photography.

Get Flashed on the Dance Floor!

Speaker: Dan Dalstra (Website) (Social Media)

Hands-On

Beginner, Intermediate

Get ready to get crazy on the dance floor! Not only will I show you different lighting set ups to nail that insane party atmosphere during the reception: from the first dances to those crazy spontaneous moments that seem to happen in an instant. We’ll also turn this class into an actual dance party and take turns dancing and shooting until we get each technique down. We’ll start with one on camera flash, learn how to drag the shutter, and then move on to using one off camera flash and then on to multiple light set ups to be able to light every reception with ease. Bring your camera, a flash and a trigger if you have them, and don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Who’s Afraid of High Speed Sync?

Speaker: Dan Dalstra (Website) (Social Media)

Hands-On

Beginner, Intermediate

Most cameras have a shutter sync speed around 1/200th or 1/250th, which can be limiting when trying to use flash, especially outdoors or in a bright environment. Enter High Speed Sync! Even some seasoned pros still get intimidated by using High Speed Sync and flash but it’s an easy way to get faster shutter speeds and help overpower the sun and get some drama into those skies. I’ll show you how and (more importantly) when to use HSS and we’ll talk about the benefits and some of the drawbacks. You’ll take your flash skills to a whole new level and feel more confident in any situation. Bring your camera, flash and triggers if you have them.
